2 Chapter 12.1 Key Terms and People
Industrial Revolution – a period of rapid growth in the use of machines in manufacturing and production that began in the mid 1700s. Textiles – cloth items Richard Arkwright – a 1769 Englishman who invented a large spinning machine called a water frame. Samuel Slater – a skilled British mechanic who moved to the United States after carefully memorizing the design of textile mill machines. Technology – the tools used to produce goods or to work. Eli Whitney – an inventor that tried to address the problems of manufacturing goods. He invented the interchangeable parts to mass produce guns. He also invented the cotton gin which made harvesting cotton much faster and easier. Interchangeable parts – a process developed by Eli Whitney in the 1790s that called for making each part of a machine exactly the same. Mass production – the efficient production of large numbers of identical goods.
