ECR Summary BGC ECR is split into two parts Stage 1 – Interaction chamber Stage 2 – Gas generation, pumping, and optical system. Stage 1 of the ECR has been approved at LHC Machine Committee (LMC) Installation proposed on LHC Beam 1 (internal) at B5L4.B 27/11/2018 Ongoing design work Tom Dodington - Johanna Glutting

5 Main Features of the design
3 all-metal gate valves to isolate beam pipe. Copper RF liner, with slits to allow efficient pumping Additional flanges for: Optics Pressure gauges Alignment target Geometers in Survey zone 27/11/2018 Ongoing design work Tom Dodington - Johanna Glutting

Vacuum Sectorisation 27/11/2018 Ongoing design work Tom Dodington - Johanna Glutting

9 Skimmer Assembly – Fixed Nozzle
new assembly Same alignment principle as current design =fixed first skimmer, alignment by moving the nozzle and second skimmer holder New adapters for skimmers, for easier and safer handling Adapter for nozzle (yellow disk) Current assembly 27/11/2018 Ongoing design work Tom Dodington - Johanna Glutting

10 Skimmer Chambers Minimization
2x DN 100 flange 1x DN 150 flange 1x DN 60 flange Dimensions: 270x250mm Pump after first and second skimmer are opposed 27/11/2018 Ongoing design work Tom Dodington - Johanna Glutting

11 Nozzle Chamber Minimization (option 1)
Gas inlet in flow axis Flange of connector tube (red) with sealing on the outer diameter and screws on the inner diameter Bellow to disconnect nozzle from mechanical stresses Nozzle chamber Skimmer chamber Gas inlet 140 190 260 27/11/2018 Ongoing design work Tom Dodington - Johanna Glutting

12 Ongoing design work Tom Dodington - Johanna Glutting
90° built in (option 1) Survey zone Metal gate valves Possible with 14mm gap to transport area Optics have to be on the bottom side Outer beam pipe Transport zone Weight of assembly on right valve: ≈45kg  Suport necessary? Optics 27/11/2018 Ongoing design work Tom Dodington - Johanna Glutting

13 Nozzle Chamber Minimization (option 2)
Radial gas supply Window flange under high pressure 160mm shorter than version 1 170 260 27/11/2018 Ongoing design work Tom Dodington - Johanna Glutting

14 Ongoing design work Tom Dodington - Johanna Glutting
Elbow options tube cross section two tubes welded together reflection plate offsets and tilted pumps lead to eaven more versions 27/11/2018 Ongoing design work Tom Dodington - Johanna Glutting

15 Ongoing design work Tom Dodington - Johanna Glutting
Adapter for CD Nozzle Design compatible with current design at CI Adapter for Nozzle can be suited for different nozzle length 27/11/2018 Ongoing design work Tom Dodington - Johanna Glutting

16 Scheme of the Developed Alignment Setup
1st skimmer holder nozzle holder irises, one with 2 linear degrees of freedom 2nd skimmer holder nozzle camera with 3 linear degrees of freedom laser with 2 linear and 2 rotational degrees of freedom x x x y y y z adjustment screws integrated in the frame z  focus of the camera with linear stages alignment frame 27/11/2018 Ongoing design work Tom Dodington - Johanna Glutting

17 Alignment Concept Installation of the equipment
Alignment of the laser to the nozzle (with the iris system) ▪ Maximization of the laser intensity Alignment targets in the focal planes of nozzle 1st and 2nd skimmer (laser is reference) Alignment of the nozzle and skimmers 27/11/2018 Ongoing design work Tom Dodington - Johanna Glutting
