Designing the School Maker Space

EMPATHY & IDEATE SURVEY AREA BREAK INTO GROUPS:
GROUP A: MEASURE SPACE GROUP B: WALL PAINT AND DÉCOR GROUP C: STORAGE, TABLES, AND TOOLS CONCEPT SKETCH OF SPACE LAYOUT FROM EACH GROUP VOTE FOR THE BEST SKETCH FROM EACH CLASS. DRAW AN ACCURATE, TO-SCALE, DRAWING OF WINNING SKETCH ABOUT THE SIZE OF A CLASS TABLE (USE BROWN PAPER). MUST HAVE AN ITEMIZED ACCOUNT OF ALL THE MATERIALS USED TO CREATE PROPOSED MAKER SPACE, INCLUDING THE INDIVIDUAL AND TOTAL COST. USE LOWES.COM FOR PRICING.

EMPATHY & IDEATE For the group that measured the space, upload a clear photo of your blue print ASAP to the Maker Space Ideas folder in Docs. Do this as soon as you walk into the room! We will be working in our original groups, not the groups from last time. As a class, we will walk down to Maker Space. Stay in your original groups and begin individual group brainstorming. Use uploaded blueprint of maker space from Docs to map out your sketch, in pencil, and using a ruler. Fact-check the measurements. These need to be precise!!!! Research and design your ideal maker space. Keep in mind that this is for the ENTIRE SCHOOL to use, not just STEM. Be realistic, but reach for the stars. This will not be a lounge area or a hang-out spot. This is a maker space. Imagine the projects you’d like to do and design around that. Research vendors and prices of all tools and equipment. Try to be as cost efficient as possible. In your group folder, create another folder titled: Maker Space. The create a running document with your list of links, ideas, items/cost, images, etc.

PROTOTYPE CLASS WILL REPLICATE THE BEST SKETCH INTO A 3D PROTOTYPE (SAME SIZE AS SKETCH) USING AN ASSORTMENT OF MATERIAL: CORRUGATED SHEETS/CARDBOARD POPSICLE STICKS TOOTHPICKS PAPER TOWEL ROLLS OTHER OBJECTS, INCLUDING PAINT

FEEDBACK & REFLECT STUDENTS AND FACULTY MEMBERS WILL VOTE ON THE BEST 2D/3D MAKER SPACE PROTOTYPE. MUST BE TO SCALE AND DIMENSIONS ARE TO BE INCLUDED IN THE FINAL DRAWING. IF NEEDED, FINAL ADJUSTMENTS WILL BE MADE TO WINNING DESIGN/PROTOTYPE.
