3 We are going to start with 10 minutes to finish up Document Based Questions
Organize yourself into groups of 3 One Southerner One Westerner (or would be Westward Immigrant) One Northerner (we are imagining yourself as a conscience Whig or a abolitionist) Who do you blame and why….

4 Dred Scott v. Sanford 1857 Dred Scott was a slave who was taken into free territory for a time, then back to the South When his master died Scott sued for his freedom (free territory = freedom) Supreme Court rules against Scott Scott can’t sue because blacks aren’t citizens “they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect.” Free territories can’t deprive citizens of property Missouri Compromise & popular sovereignty are unconstitutional From Missouri, taken north four years in Illinois and Wisconsin

5 8. Lincoln-Douglas Debates (1858)
Abraham Lincoln challenges Stephen Douglas for his Senate seat & loses, but gains fame They debate how to reconcile popular sovereignty w/ Dred Scott decision Douglas: “Freeport Doctrine” territories can keep out slaveholders by refusing to support & uphold slave legislation Lincoln: slavery is a moral, not political issue So just elect representatives who would enforce slave property laws and slaver owners would want to live there. Lincoln doesn’t want to associate with abolitionism

6 A Summary of Kansas-Nebraska Act and its fallout
To Start- Nebraska was one territory to be admitted as a free state under the Missouri Compromise Stephen Douglas make a deal for a RR out of Chicago in exchange for splitting into Kansas/Nebraska- and opening it up to Popular Sovereignty Fraudulent elections leads to Two Governments Lecompton and Topeka Bleeding Kansas (Sack of Lawrence & Pottawatomie Massacre) Lecompton holds a constitutional convention (anti-slavery forces boycott- Less than 10% of the population votes) Lecompton Constitution does not allow for eradication of slavery in Kansas (only prevention of more slaves entering) Buchanan back Lecompton Const. Stephen Douglas does not Lecompton Const. fails to pass, Kansas still not a state.

8 John Brown is captured, charged with treason, and hanged
In 1859 John Brown & his followers try to take over federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, VA Wanted to get guns & start a slave revolt (probably should have informed local slaves first) Slaves don’t arrive, but militia do – Brown’s men are surrounded in the local engine house with 11 hostages. U.S. Marines (under command of Robert E. Lee) arrive from Washington D.C. John Brown is captured, charged with treason, and hanged He became a beloved martyr in the North Emerson compares him to Jesus The South was terrified It’s one thing for slaves to revolt on their own; but if Northerners are helping them…. The South believes John Brown = Republican
