1 Year Nursery (Class HP) Curriculum Overview Term: Spring 1
Topic Goldilocks and the Three Bears Literacy, Language and Communication Mathematical Development LLC: This terms topic Goldilocks and the Three Bears allows the children to discuss and learn about a traditional tale. The children are now very confident in the classroom environment and are ready to take on some new challenges. Lots of the focus tasks and continuous provision will revolve around the children becoming familiar with the story and improving their oracy skills. There will be opportunities for the children to work on our outdoor stage to retell the story in small groups as well as access the role play area in the classroom. We will look at the main characters in the book and discuss the choices they make, what they look like and the things they might say. As part of the topic we will also look at bears that live in various places around the world and write a class report on what we have found out. Numbers will still be a big focus for our spring term. It is incredibly important that the children are secure in recognising and counting practical apparatus up to 5. Those who are secure will look at forming the number to 5 and recognising numbers to 10. However, we will also be looking at big and small , quantities in regards to empty and full, most and least and patterns. Lots of these concepts will be taught practically and with our Goldilocks and the Three Bears topic threaded throughout. Continuous Provision The continuous provision in the classroom is designed so that the children can practise the new skills that they have learnt through play. All of the provision is designed around our topic Goldilocks and the Three Bears! The continuous provision is enhanced with new elements depending on the focus task focus and new skills we have learnt in the weeks prior. The children will access both the indoor and the outdoor environment and will also participate in small group focus tasks. Knowledge and Understanding of the World Creative Development We are very lucky to have our very own forest school in Maes Y Llan and will spend some of our creative time exploring out there. We’ll create tree rubbings from the bark and hunt for Goldilocks following clues in there. We’ll make our very own bears and Goldilocks in our creative area and will explore musical instruments to match the sounds in the woods. Personal and Social Development As part of the children’s personal and social development we will discuss the choices that Goldilocks makes and whether we think these are good or bad choices. We will model making good choices in the various areas of the classroom and use our words to explain why these are good or bad choices. Along the theme of Goldilocks and the Three Bears we will also be looking at porridge as a healthy breakfast choice. We will discuss what we have for breakfast, discuss foods we think are healthy and unhealthy and maybe even sample some porridge with healthy toppings too! Our main focuses for Knowledge and Understanding of the world this term will be the different species of bears and their habitats. We will explore the other animals that might be living in the woods that Goldilocks walks through and may even visit Ty Mawr to see what’s in the Minibeast woods there! We will discuss materials that would be good for building Baby Bear a new chair and look at which woodland materials float and sink. WELSH The focus for Welsh this term will be introducing ourselves in welsh, focusing on the weather and using the Helpwr Heddiw board in the classroom more independently. We will look at counting up to 5 in Welsh and focus on the colours alongside using the welsh words for big and small.
