Urban regeneration processes in Portugal Contribution for the Parnu Seminar.

Most of the Portuguese towns are based on urban historical structures. These prototypical forms are into two basic groups: littoral and inlands forms.

Walled cities, ports and rossios were the fundamental basis for the transformations of these towns and landscapes along last centuries.

Important changes happened during the 20 th century: Urban expanded shapes provoked a large quantity of brownfields and gentrification processes in the traditional and historical areas.

littoral urban forms created a historical process where relationships between port and city provoked several formal solutions

The most common resource for the successful result was based on a strong urban public space Eventual private initiatives were completing the total proposal

Final results were better when private residential areas were implemented, into a mixed concept.

Mixed activities are essential to get a successful regeneration.

At the end an excessive regeneration can be a serious problem. Identity problems were important when regeneration strategies included gentrification activities.

Scale of the proposal is definitively an important question. Problems about brownfields are coming from this perspective.

Old industrial areas, disabled port areas are generally too big for the scale of the town and the urban society is not able to absorb it.

Thanks! Filipa and José
