1 Electricity Static Electricity

2 What is Electricity? There are 2 kinds of electricity: Static Current
Electricity is the build up or movement of electrons.

3 Electrons are... negatively charged
orbit around (outside of) the nucleus are able to move between atoms, through a piece of metal

4 Static Electricity The buildup of negative charges (electrons) on surfaces of materials. Materials with greater electron attraction will take electrons from other objects + - - + + - - + + - + - Neutral Electron build up on one side

5 Law of Electric Charges
Opposite charges will ATTRACT Like charges will REPEL Neutral objects will ATTRACT to charged (positive OR negative) objects + - + +

6 Electrostatic Series Weak hold on electrons Human Hands Glass Human Hair Nylon Wool Silk Aluminum Cotton Wood Hard Rubber Nickel Silver Gold Polyester Plastic The electrostatic series tells us which material will be losing electrons and which will be gaining. weak hold = losing strong hold = gaining Strong hold on electrons

7 Charging By Friction During Before After + - + - - + - + - + - +
neutral neutral Positive Negative

8 Electroscope We can use an electroscope to tell if static electricity is present.
