3 Agenda

4 Background Bristol City Council’s (BCC) Smart City strategy was introduced focusing on 3 core dimensions: Smart Data Smart Energy Smart Transport This trilogy has consistently enabled Bristol to punch above its weight in the Smart City arena to gain local and international funding and prominence. Leading to it becoming UK’s leading “smart city” according to the second UK Smart Cities Index, commissioned by Huawei UK. Smart Data plays a particular exciting role as the Open Data Barometer, a composite index developed by the World Wide Web Foundation, found that the UK ranks 1st out of 92 nations in terms of readiness for open data initiatives, their implementation and their impact on business, politics and civil society.

5 Why open data? Improve the city’s democratic dialogue and deepening the relationship with citizens. Increased transparency and accountability. Identifying new datasets and having the ability to combine these to uncover new insights into the city and a renewed sense of understanding. Unlocking potential value which can empower the local digital economy and fuel new enterprise. Enabling innovative data-driven products towards more efficient models of service delivery. Helping citizens access the information needed to build evidence based cases for change.

10 Transport and Connectivity
The BCC’s Transport department see key benefits in opening our up transport data, including: Greater general transparency regarding the transport network. Improved ability to provide narrative to transport policies and interventions. Facilitate increased innovation within the wider transport sector: e.g. third party apps and services. Reduce costs in processing data, such as sharing data between authorities, responding to FOI requests All the above will support key transport policy objectives such as: Improved transport network efficiency; Improved air quality and reduced emissions and Improved user experience.

11 Transport and Connectivity (continued)
BCC’s Transport department are working towards opening up more transport data, however key barriers include: Concerns around data privacy and GDPR compliance. Difficulty accessing data stored or maintained by third parties. Lack of national standardisation and consistency in key transport datasets. Lack of evidence and case studies on the value of open transport data, making it difficult to justify the resources needed to do so.
