2 Manufacturing Drives Our Economy
Important role in Ohio’s economy: manufacturing Production of goods by hand or machine Goods are things that are made/grown then sold Northwest: Cars & glass Northeastern: Steel, ceramic, plastic, & cars Southwestern: Metal products, soap/detergents, and other chemicals

3 The Business of Agriculture
Ohioans work in a variety of jobs to earn their income Money earned from a business or work Many people in Ohio are supported by agriculture The growing of crops and raising animals Ohio has very fertile soil

4 Corn and soybeans are Ohio’s leading crops
Wheat, fruits, and other vegetables are also grown in Ohio Farmers work to raise the quality of their crops: Fertilizers: makes soil richer Insecticides: kills insects/bugs Herbicides: kills weeds Soil conservation

5 Many types of livestock or farm animals are raised in Ohio
Dairy cattle Beef cattle Hogs Chickens Turkey

6 Forests in Every County
Ohio was once covered by 25 million acres of forest and is now covered by only about 8 million acres Largest forests are found in southeastern Ohio Wood from the forests are used for building materials, furniture, fuel, and paper

7 Mining in Ohio Mining is the work of taking minerals from the earth
Salt mining is Ohio’s oldest mining industry Native Americans collected salt from the springs Coal is Ohio’s largest mining industry and is done in southeastern Ohio Sand and gravel is the second largest
