1 Lesson 5.4 Write Linear Equations in Standard Form
Essential Question: How do you write an equation in standard form?

2 Before we start… Compare the two tables. Can you conclude that the two equations are equivalent?

3 What is Standard Form? In standard form x and y are on the same side of the equation and all numbers are integers.

4 How do you write equivalent equations in standard form?
To write an equivalent equation, multiply each side of the equation by a number.

8 How do you write an equation in standard form?
Calculate the slope, if necessary. Write point-slope form. Substitute the values in for slope and the point. You can use either point. Rewrite the equation so that all variable terms are on one side.

13 How do you write horizontal and vertical lines?
Horizontal lines have the form y = a Vertical lines have the form x = b If given an ordered pair, you can write both a horizontal and vertical line.

17 How do I write an equation in standard form if a coefficient is missing?
Write the equation. Substitute the coordinates of the given point for x and y in the equation. Solve for the missing coefficient. Complete the equation.

18 Find the missing coefficient in the equation of the line that passes through the given point. Write the completed equation.

19 Find the missing coefficient in the equation of the line that passes through the given point. Write the completed equation.

20 Find the missing coefficient in the equation of the line that passes through the given point. Write the completed equation.
