1 S.A.S. Science, Art & Spelling Night April 20th
Your Challenge: Get involved today!

2 “I Want To Do a Good Job For The Science Fair…… “What will it take?”
CVES 2012

3 My materials (the things I use) What happens
Kindergarten & Grade 1 My investigation My question My materials (the things I use) What happens (say it, draw it, take a picture!)

4 The Scientific Method vs The Demonstration

5 Grade 2&3 My Question My Materials My Prediction My Procedure Results Conclusion Prediction was ……

6 1. Question Our science fair question is: 2.Prediction I predict ___________________________________________________________ because__________________________________________________. State your hypothesis—your guess about what the answer will be.

7 3. Methods & Tools What steps will you follow? Draw a picture of what you’ll do in your investigation. Label the tools you’ll use. These are the tools I will use: Describe your procedure (what you did to answer your question).

8 4.Variables Decide on your variable (something you will change or vary) or observations that will help you find your answer. Procedure Variable Kept the Same (controlled) At least one variable kept the same (controlled) is identified in the procedure or the materials list (e.g. “the same amount of water in each cup”). Changed (manipulated) Variable Only one changed (manipulated) variable is written in your procedure. Measured (responding) Variable The measured (responding) variable is written in your procedure. It is the variable that you would record in your data table (e.g. the time it took for the sugar to dissolve). Record Measurements The procedure states that measurements are recorded periodically. Use the words, “Measure _______________ and record in data table.” Trials are Repeated More than one trial is planned. “Do the whole investigation over two more times” to get more accurate & reliable data. Logical Steps The steps of the procedure are detailed enough to give to your friend to repeat the investigation. Does it make sense?

9 5. Data Collection This is what happened. Decide on how you will measure or describe your results. 88Try to use measurements to describe your observations- for example, report that the plants grew “1 cm,” rather than that they were “bigger.” You can use tables, graphs, or charts to summarize the results of your measurements or observations. This is what our data means: Answer the questions: What happened? Do your results support or disprove your hypothesis? If you did this experiment again, what would you do differently and why? 8. New Questions A new question I have is:

11

12 Where can I get ideas? Can I do it with a friend? Any final tips? Most important……
