1 Energy and Life Module 12 A

2 Syllabus for the next few weeks:

3

4 Pre lab preperation Please read over the labs on pages 297, 299 and 300 I will be modifying them a bit so that we have time to do all of them next week.

5 Energy: Where does it come from
The energy in most living things ultimately originates from the _____ Let’s see if we can follow the path of energy in our world. Sun

6 Energy Organisms that produce their own food and get most of their energy directly from the sun are called _____________ Organisms that get their energy by eating other organisms are called _____________ Organisms that recycle dead matter back into creation are called _______________ Producers Consumers Decomposers

7

8 Energy If a consumer eats only producers, it is called an ____________
If a consumer eats only other consumers, it is called a ____________ If a consumer eats both producers and consumers, it is called an ____________ Herbivore Carnivore Omnivore

9 Energy: turning food into energy
Organisms convert food to energy through a chemical process called ____________ It is basically the same chemical process as burning wood, except instead of heat, we get _______ for our bodies to use. Though your book does not tell you this, Combustion is also referred to as _________________ Combustion Energy Cellular Respiration

10 Combustion/cellular respiration
Combustion in anything requires oxygen and produces energy, carbon dioxide, and water. In burning wood, the energy produced is light and heat. In Cellular Respiration, the energy is adenosine triphosphate (ATP)

11 Food and energy The 3 main things that your body can burn for energy are ______________, _____ ,and ________. Carbohydrates Fats Proteins

12 Carbohydrates Your body prefers to burn carbohydrates

13 fats Fat insulates and cushions your body and organs.
Your body stores energy in fats to use when it needs more energy than it has taken in that day…like on the days you spend at COACH rushing from one class to another. Certain vitamins can only be stored in these fat reserves.

14

15 fats You already know that you can get fats from the foods you eat. Did you know that your body can also produce most of the fats it needs from excess carbohydrates and proteins? There are certain fats that your body cannot produce, called Essential fats. You must get these from your food.

16 Essential fat sources

17 Proteins Proteins Your body burns ________ only if you have too many of them, because they are essential to many other chemical processes that occur in your body. Proteins are made of _____________ linked together in long chains. Amino Acids

18 Amino acids Nearly every chemical reaction that occurs in the body is affected by proteins. The information stored in DNA is used to tell the cells in your body how to make proteins

19 Warm or coldbloded A person’s internal temperature remains relatively constant. We do this by burning some of that energy that we have produced. Organisms that burn energy to maintain their internal body temperature are endothermic…also referred to as _____ _______. Organisms that can’t control their internal body temperatures are ectothermic…also referred to as _____ _______. Most organisms are ectothermic Warm Blooded Cold Blooded

20 Warm or coldbloded Maintaining a constant body temperature requires a whole lot of energy. This means that Warm Blooded animals eat _____ than Cold Blooded animals. more

21 Calories and metabolism
energy A calorie is a unit used to measure _______ Your _________ ____ , sometimes referred to as metabolism, is the total rate at which your body uses energy. Your ______ _________ _____ , abbreviated as BMR, which is the minimum amount of energy required by the body in a day. The amount of _________ that you engage in every day. metabolic rate Your metabolic rate has main two factors that affect it… basal metabolic rate activity

22 Combustion/cellular respiration
You do not need to memorize this. I just want you to have a general idea of how it works.
