2 Background/History Most likely the oldest form of healing
The oldest written records go back 3,000 years ago to China There is evidence found in cave paintings from 15,000 B.C. that shows the therapeutic benefits of touch Touch is a human tendency we all use, it is an instinct

3 Hippocrates believed that all physicians needed to know massage, and be well acquainted with it
Fun fact: in ancient Rome, massage was a standard medical practice. Julius Caesar received a massage everyday to help control his epileptic seizures In the U.S., massage practice diminished around the 1930’s with the development of pharmaceutical, surgical, and technological medicine

5 Benefits Swedish massage- promotes relaxation, relieve muscle tension, improve circulation, and restore flexibility and range of motion Deep-tissue massage- treats tight muscles and relieves lower back pain Lymphatic massage- stimulates lymph flow, which helps remove blood proteins and excess water from spaces between cells, allowing them to receive oxygen Reflexology- improved energy, enhanced digestion, relief of back pain and headaches

6 Healing Touch- relaxation, and pain reduction
Therapeutic Touch- relief of fatigue and pain, and reduced stress and anxiety

7 Limitations Not suitable for people with blood circulation disorders, as it loosen blood clots Should not be administered to anyone suffering from excessive fever, vomiting, varicose veins, nausea, and jaundice Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy Not recommended for someone immediately after chemotherapy or radiatation

There are many types of massage, which means many ways to learn and be certified or get a degree Require hands-on experience, and hours completed Reflexology certification I interviewed Julie Gustafson

9 Importance to Me I have just recently decided I want to study massage therapy My mom has greatly influenced, and encouraged me I love it!
