6 The problem: Missouri Compromise
People living in Missouri wanted to become a state The problem: they wanted their state to allow slavery

7 Missouri Compromise At the time their were an even number of slave states and free states (11 of each) The balance of power would shift to those states which allowed slavery There were an equal number of slave and free states.

8 Maine (formerly part of Massachusetts) would become a free state
Missouri would become a slave state All new states above the latitude line 36 / 30 would be free, below would allow slaves
