2 WWI Begins Many years of Nationalism, Imperialism and the Alliance system led to World War I WWI begins when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated in 1914 The War: The Allies (France, Great Britain, Russia) vs. Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire) 1914 Germany invades France and The British Navy blockades Germany from receiving supplies

3 WWI Highlights On the western front the war turned into a stalemate as a result of trench warfare 1915 On the Eastern front the Central Powers defeated Russia and focused on the western front Machine guns, trench warfare, constant bombing, poison gas, filth/disease caused a slaughter 1917 USA enters the war after Germany sank the Lusitania British Ship that had Americans on it and after Germany asked Mexico to help them in the War

4 Life during WWI WWI became a total war meaning governments took control of their economies (such as production) In Europe, governments set product prices, wages, rent control, regulated food supplies to help the war effort Since many men were drafted to WWI, women filled men’s jobs including heavy industry jobs Governments used propaganda (advertisements) to encourage their citizens support for the war

5 WWI Ends 1917 Russia suffering from poverty & starvation led them to a revolution and civil war (no more WWI involvement) 1921 The Red Army or The Communists led by Lenin took total control of Russia ending civil war The main reason The Allies win WWI in 1918 was the USA’s entry with fresh troops and much supplies At the end of WWI: 10 million dead soldiers, Treaty of Versailles is signed creating new boundaries, 9 new nations and Germany is forced to pay the Allies war costs
