Atom- basic particle from which all elements are made At the center of an atom is a tiny, dense nucleus containing protons and neutrons. Surrounding the nucleus is a cloudlike region of moving electrons

4 Composed of subatomic particles- electrons, protons, and neutrons
Electron- very tiny, NEGATIVELY charged particle that moves around the nucleus of an atom Proton- small, POSITIVELY charged particles found in the nucleus of an atom NEUTRON- small particle in the nucleus of an atom with NO ELECTRICAL CHARGE

Protons and neutrons are about equal in mass Protons and neutrons make up almost ALL the mass of an atom Electrons are MUCH SMALLER than protons. It takes almost 1,840 electrons to equal the mass of one proton!

Atomic Theory- Grew over a long period of time as a series of models that developed from experimental evidence The models changed over time as scientists learned more about the atom Began around 430 BC when Greek philosopher Democritus proposed that matter was made of small pieces that could not be cut into smaller parts (atomos=uncuttable) 1804 John Dalton thought all elements consist of atoms that cannot be divided. He also thought that atoms of the same element are exactly alike.

7 Atomic Theory continued
In 1897 JJ Thompson discovered atoms contain electrons In 1911 Ernest Rutherford found protons In 1913 Niels Bhor suggested electrons orbit a nucleus like planets orbit the sun In the 1920’s, scientists determined that electrons don’t orbit like planets. Instead, electrons move rapidly within a cloudlike region surrounding the nucleus, aka “Cloud Model” In 1932 James Chadwick discovered neutrons
