What are the basics? The formation of Oil is from the remains of animals and plants that lived millions of years ago in a marine (water) environment.  Over the years, the remains were covered by layers of mud.  Heat and pressure from these layers helped the remains turn into what we today call Crude Oil .  The word "Petroleum" means "rock oil" or "oil from the earth."

The problem is oil-importing nations, the weakening price of crude means an abundance of troubles for many oil exporters. Nations like Nigeria, Iran and Libya have year after year pushed the price of crude to ever higher peaks in order to finance ambitious development programs. Now the sagging demand for petroleum is crimping export earnings, cutting into government revenues, and in some cases even beginning to threaten the continuation of many big industrialization projects.
