Unit Conclusion acronym, stereotype, pseudonym, style, allusion, parody

Definitions Acronym: abbreviation formed from initial letters in a phrase or word (NASA = National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Stereotype: widely held, but oversimplified (and somewhat hurtful) image or idea about a person or thing (All white girls drink Starbucks and wear Uggs.) Pseudonym: fictitious name, usually used by an author (Calvin Cordozar Broadus’s pseudonym is Snoop Dogg.) Allusion: reference designed to call something to mind without referencing it explicitly (“I’ve got the moves like Jagger.” Maroon 5 is alluding to Mick Jagger.)

Style Style: the way an author uses words, arranges sentences, and creates meaning. Ask: What kind of words are being used? “Big” words? Archaic (outdated) words? Harsh words? Short sentences? Complex sentences? Long paragraphs? Lots of dialogue? Lots of details and description? Character details? Character names? Location/setting description?

Idiom a group of words whose meaning is established by usage rather than from those of the individual words; the words themselves mean something totally different Examples: It’s raining cats and dogs. = It’s raining really hard. I finally see the light. = I understand. He has a chip on his shoulder. = He’s holding a grudge. She rubs me the wrong way. = She bothers me. It’s time to pay the piper. = It’s time to own up to your actions and face the consequences. She came to see me out of the blue. = She came to see me unexpectedly.

Parody A parody (or lampoon) is a work that imitates another work in order to ridicule, ironically comment on, or poke fun at the work itself, the subject of the work, or the author/fictional voice of the subject. The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are parodies of news programs and talk shows.

Example: Nintendo Point: Nintendo is something you play because you have nothing better to do with your life.

What are these parodies making fun of? What’s their goal?
