5 Conflict Cold War As nations in Africa gained independence, they sought support from the US and USSR, who fought each other to support these new countries. 1970s, both Ethiopia and Somalia had USSR supported governments.

Somalia descended into civil war as different clans and rival warlords fought for power. Fighting prevented aid from reaching drought victims in both countries. 1992, UN intervened but couldn’t stop bloodshed so withdrew in 1995.
