Vocabulary Words Primary
A document or object which was created during the time of a specific event Examples: diaries, letters, interviews, news film, buildings, furniture Secondary A document or object which was created at a later date than an event occurred. Examples: textbooks, magazines articles, history books, and encycopedias.

Step 1: Read through the document twice Step 2: Uncover the meaning of any unknown words, people, places Step 3: Identify who wrote the document Step 4: Establish time/place (where, when, what type of document is it) Step 5: Thinking about the context (what was happening when the document was written) Step 6: Conclusion, what did the document say in regards to Pocahontas saving John Smith?

Captain John Smith’s Letter (1608) Captain John Smith’s first writings about Jamestown were sent to England on a supply ship, along with an early map, even before his landmark voyages. This account was published as A True Relation of Such Occurrences and Accidents of Noate As Hath Happened in Virginia.
