Advanced Metering Infrastructure Smart Meters
Advantages for Electric Companies Eliminates manual monthly meter readings Monitors the electric system much more quickly Makes it possible to use power resources more efficiently Provides real-time data that is useful for balancing electric loads while reducing power outages (i.e., blackouts) Enables dynamic pricing, which raises or lowers the cost of electricity based on demand Avoids the capital expense of building new power plants Helps to optimize income with existing resources The utility is notified immediately when a meter loses grid power and the system can then predict more precisely the location of equipment damage or failure.

Advanced Metering Infrastructure Smart Meters
Helps to optimize income with existing resources The utility is notified immediately when a meter loses grid power and the system can then predict more precisely the location of equipment damage or failure. The utility records the voltage at each meter which allows them to determine issues and make corrections or repairs before outages occur. Real-time reporting from meters helps identify meter tampering and theft. Smart Meters provides two way communications Member specific usage patterns help the utility target market offerings rather than the blanket approach.

Advanced Metering Infrastructure Smart Meters
Advantages for the customers Far greater and more detailed feedback regarding energy use Enable consumers to adjust their habits in order to lower electricity bills Reduces the number of blackouts and system-wide electricity failures Customers can get near real-time information on interval usage data. This helps them better understand how weather and behavior are linked to their usage and make changes if they desire.

Rate Options Allows for innovative rates such as Prepaid. Prepaid allows the member to pay in advance. Each day, the system reduces the prepaid balance based upon the member's usage. The system analyzes how many days are remaining and notifies the member when the balance is running low. If the balance runs out, the system remotely disconnects the meter. Members can avoid paying a deposit if they choose Prepaid.
