Divisions of the Environmental and Natural Resources Profession

Divisions 1. Soil and Water Conservation – Involves collecting samples of soil and water, analyzing the samples, preparing soil and water conservation plans and educating the public in improving conservation practices; growing enough food for the world’s population depends on soil and water conversation 2. Air Quality – Involves collecting air samples and analyzing them, preparing plans to reduce pollution, and working with people to improve air quality.

Divisions 3. Solid Waste Management – Includes collection and disposal of solid waste, testing for any environmental damage and working at disposal sites. 4. Wastewater Management and Treatment – Includes the installation and management of wastewater collection and treatment facilities. 5. Hazardous Materials – Includes planning safety programs, designing equipment to handle hazardous materials, cleaning up accidents, transporting hazardous materials and disposing of hazardous materials.

Divisions 6. Forestry and Horticulture – Involves working with tree farms, forest operation, and using plants to improve the environment and surroundings. 7. Wildlife and Endangered Species Protection – Generally focuses on protecting aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals. This can be done by developing protection programs or by enforcing related laws. 8. Mineral and Fossil Fuel Extraction – Usually involves the removal of mineral and fossil fuel products from the ground and preparing these products for the consumer.

Divisions 9. Recycling and Composting – Involves various duties associated with transporting, sorting, processing and compacting various materials that are recycled. 10. Weather and Climate – May involve collecting weather information, preparing forecasts, studying trends and preparing maps. 11. Education and Communication – People in this segment are often found working in a wide variety of businesses and governmental agencies. The work usually involves educating people about the environment. This can involve writing, editing, radio/TV journalism, tour guides or teaching.

How is all this Important to the Economy?
1. Protects the soil, water and air enabling humans to live properly and grow food. 2. Recycles waste 3. Manages hazardous materials waste 4. Protects plants and animals. 5. Provides information to society about our climate and weather. 6. Educates our society
