In a compound sentence…
…a coordinating conjunction is preceded by a comma.

…a conjunctive adverb is preceded by a semicolon and followed by a comma.
Time drags during study hall; therefore, Ted fidgets.
…the conjunction may sometimes (rarely) be understood, and only a comma is used.
