2 Constitution The basis of all U.S. law
Written by first leaders of the country American colonists rebelled against British rule because they did not have the rights and protections they wanted. The power of the government comes from it’s people. First modern republic

3 Limited Government the power of the government is limited by laws and rules. protect the people’s rights from government interference people have the ability to change government

4 Constitutional Amendment
a change or addition to the Constitution can correct mistakes or add ideas needs strong support from Congress and/or the public (not easy) 27 total amendments

5 Bill of Rights the ten rights guaranteed to all Americans in 1791.
include freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the right to a fair trial, and the right to assemble peacefully.

6 Federal Government a federal system divides power between the federal (national) government and state governments. This allows states to make some decisions that are best for their specific situation.

7 Executive Branch President
Duties: enforce laws, lead the armed forces, control foreign affairs (international relations)

8 Legislative Branch Congress Make laws
In U.S. separated into Senate (100 members, two from each states) and the House of Representatives (435, determined by the population of each state)

9 Judicial Branch Supreme Court
Decide if laws follow the Constitution or not. Supreme Court Justices are nominated by President and approved by Congress.
