1
Layers of the Atmosphere
2
Troposphere Closest to the Earth Tropo- means “changing”
As altitude increases – temperature _?_, Density _?_, all weather happens here! Shallowest Layer, but contains the most mass.
3
Stratosphere Strato means “layer” or “spreading out”
Lower part (closest to Troposphere) is cold (-600C) Upper part is warmer. Why? Upper part contains the Ozone Layer The Ozone absorbs ultraviolet energy from the sun which is transformed into heat thus warming the air. Period 2 – Upper part contains /12, Period 3 – Stratosphere. Period 4 – Thermosphere second slide.
4
Temperature decreases (-900C)
Meso means “middle” Temperature decreases (-900C) Burns up meteoroids thus protecting the Earth’s surface Meteoroids: chunks of stone and metal in space
5
Thermosphere Made of two layers: Ionosphere & Thermosphere
6
Ionosphere Lower part of the Thermosphere Contains the Auroras
Energy from the sun causes gas molecules to become _?_ (electrically charged particles). The “lights” that you see are caused by the particles from the sun that enter the ionosphere near the North Pole. The particles strike oxygen & nitrogen atoms which cause them to glow.
7
Thermosphere Upper part of the Thermosphere Thermo means “heat”
Energy from the sun strikes this layer first Temperature is very hot (up to 18000C), but if you took its temperature it would show 00C or below. Air is thin The air particles’ KE is moving very fast, but the particles are so spaced out that they do not collide.
8
Exosphere Exo means “outer” Where the satellites are located
Long distance calls, Television
