Each Manor was usually made up of: Farming Lands Woodlands Common Pastures At least one village Were almost self-sufficient. Provided enough food for all who lived on it

2 The Manor 101 Where was it located? Who was in charge?
Almost always located near a river or a stream For water (drink/bathe/irrigate) & power the mill for grinding grain Who was in charge? Lord of the Manor They had land set aside for themselves that was used to farm for profit This land was known as “Demesne” Page 48 Textbook, there is a diagram of this

3 The Manor 101 part II The Lord of the Manor usually had a manager of their land Known as the Bailiff The Bailiff was responsible for the day to day activities Collected the rents and supervised serfs and freeholders on a manor Think of them as the property manager

4 The Manor 101 part III Freeholders & Serfs were used to work the land, they were also responsible to the Lord of the Manor What they said “goes” If production needed to increase, the L-o-M would instruct the Freeholders & Serfs to pick up the pace…

5 The Manor 101 part IV The Church was also given parcels of the Kings land similar to a Manor More on the Church later
