2 Literary Movements Puritans- the Bible provided a model, diaries and histories are most common: Jonathan Edwards & Anne Bradstreet Rationalism- Reason above all else: Ben Franklin & Patrick Henry Romanticism- Poetry is highest form of imagination, looks to nature, feeling and intuition over reason: William Cullen Bryant & John Russell Lowell Dark Romanticism- explored the dark side of human nature and the madness of the psyche, Edgar Allan Poe!

What cycle is described in the poem? What type of poem is “Thanatopsis?” Elegy, lyrical- expresses a feeling, emotion What does the title mean? What should people do when they feel afraid of death? What does nature urge the poet to find comfort in? Terms to know: personification, inversion (inverting normal word order)
