The Epic Literary Terms and Devices

2 Protagonist the main character in a story
he or she may be a good or bad person

3 Antagonist the character who works against the protagonist
this is not necessarily "the bad guy" - often the protagonist of a story, for example, is a bad person

4 Dynamic Character a character who changes as a result of the story's events

5 Static Character a character who does not change over the course of a story

6 Foil Character a character who contrasts with another character(usually the protagonist) in order to highlight particular qualities of the other character

7 Flat Character a character who has only one or two personality traits and isn't very developed

8 Round Character the character is complex and like a real person; he or she has many personality traits

9 Comic Relief the inclusion of a humorous character, scene, or witty dialogue in an otherwise serious work, often to relieve tension.

10 Allusion a reference to a statement, a person, a place, or an event from literature, history, religion, myth, politics, sports, science, or culture

11 Foreshadowing the use of clues to hint at events that will occur later in the plot
