1 G.O.T. = Get On Task Plants MY GOAL Thurs 09.27.12
Measurement TOPIC 5 MY GOAL G.O.T. = Get On Task Thurs Plants I will… find out about 4 important processes that occur in plants Open textbook to page 648 – look at Figure 21.8 – read about root hairs Turn to ISN page 40 & answer this: What is the advantage of having sooo many root hairs on a root?

2 Cornell Notes, ISN p.39 TISSUES IN PLANTS Function Location A) DERMAL
Protect, prevent water loss B) GROUND Photosynthesis, food storage, support, protection C) VASCULAR Transport of food, water, minerals

3

4 Cornell Notes, ISN p.41 Roots : anchor, support, prevent erosion, storage Meristem/Meristematic Region

5 Cornell Notes, ISN p.41 2. Stems: transport, support XYLEM Phloem

6 Cornell Notes, ISN p.41 Leaves: food production thru photosynthesis  food is Glucose = sugar

7 Cornell Notes, ISN p.41 Flowers: reproduction StaMEN = male
Pistil = female Pistil StaMENS

8 ISN p.38 MT 4, Daily Formative Check #3 Tissues
Label the diagrams as either Next to the tissue, match the function: Xylem or Phoem… a) Stores carbohydrates look at the arrows! b) Moves food (sugar) and water C) Protects

9 ISN p.41 MT 4, Daily Formative Check #4 Flowers & Leaves
Purpose of cuticle?__________________________ Purpose of Guard cell?_______________________ What is “X”?_______________________________ List 3 substances that enter “X” ________________ __________________________________________ List 3 substance that leave “X”_________________ What is “A”?_________________________ What is “B”?_________________________ What is “D”?_________________________ What would happen if either “A” or “B” were not present? ________________________ ___________________________________

10 Your Job Today Complete notes on ISN page 42 & 43…
I will help… using the next few slides… But you will need to try on your own 1st, then we will discuss…

11 Plant Processes ISN pages 42 & 43
Photosynthesis = process of using sunlight, CO2, & water to make glucose & O2 Cellular Respiration = process of using glucose/food & O2 to release energy (ATP) Transpiration = process of water absorption, movement, & release through stomata to the atmosphere so the 2 processes above can take place! Reproduction = process of making more plants by way of flowers or cones

12 PHOTOSYNTHESIS CELL RESPIRATION
SUN! Carbon Dioxide Water ATP!! Carbon Dioxide Water Oxygen Glucose Oxygen Glucose

13 TRANSPIRATION Water UP Through Xylem

14 REPRODUCTION Male cone releases pollen  lands on female cone  seed develops in cone but exposed when cone is open  takes 2 years! Stamen makes pollen (male gamete)  pollen falls on or is transferred to Stigma of Pistil  Fertilized egg moves down to ovary to develop into fruit  Seeds enclosed

15 Pollen collected from superior male pine trees is applied to female pine cone flowers inside an isolation bag.

16 Stop Think And Reflect Did we reach our goal?
Our goal today was for you to find out the 4 important processes that occur in plants…. Did you reach that goal? How do you know that you reached the goal? What are you going to do if you did not reach that goal?? 16

17 Study tonight for the MAJORSummative tomorrow!
EOCA = End of Class Assignment Be the change you wish to see in the world 17 17
