Fisheries, Aquaculture and Seafood research in FP7

The Seventh Framework Programme FP7

Framework Programme 7 2007 – 2013 Cooperation – Collaborative research People – Human Potential JRC (nuclear) Ideas – Frontier Research Capacities – Research Capacity (Infrastructure, SMEs, Regions) JRC (non-nuclear) Euratom +

9 Themes 1.Health5.984 M 2.Food, agriculture, fisheries and biotechnology1.935 3.Information and communication technologies9.110 4.Nanosciences, nanotechnologies, materials and new production technologies3.467 5.Energy2.265 6.Environment (including climate change)1.886 7.Transport (including aeronautics)4.180 8.Socio-economic sciences and the humanities607 9.Security and space2.858 Cooperation – Collaborative research

Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Biotechnology: Objectives Build a European Knowledge-Based Bio- Economy (KBBE) Respond to social and economic challenges Involve all stakeholders (incl. industry) in research Support CAP and CFP Respond quickly to emerging research needs

2. Food, Agriculture, Fisheries and Biotechnology 2. Food, Agriculture, Fisheries and Biotechnology Sustainable production and management of biological resources from land, forest, and aquatic environments Sustainable production and management of biological resources from land, forest, and aquatic environments Fork to farm: Food, health and well being Life sciences and biotechnology for sustainable non-food products and processes Life sciences and biotechnology for sustainable non-food products and processes

Fisheries research areas Ecosystem approach to Fisheries Management: –The impact of fishing in the environment –Governance: Operational/Regional approach Scientific Basis of Fisheries Management: –Instruments: Effort and capacity management, –Governance: Addressing uncertainty and complexity –Knowledge base: Genetic structure of fish populations; causes of variation in abundance estimates, –Specific management areas: Deep sea fisheries management; Improving research in support to scientific advice to fisheries management outside EU waters (networking) The economics and social aspects of fisheries: –Improving cost-efficiency in fisheries Evaluation of fisheries management regimes, MPAs, gear selectivity and other well covered areas in FP 6 not likely to be covered i the first calls

Aquaculture research areas Essential Biological Functions Ecosystem approach to aquaculture: –Reduce the impact on the environment –Promote less intensive systems –Coastal zone management, site planning Overcoming capture based aquaculture Better cooperation with Third countries Aquaculture Health (preventive measures) Microbial control in aquaculture Shellfish culture Other generic topics: Genomics, Health (animals include fish!) Welfare, Feeds, Breeding and other well covered areas in FP 6 not likely to be covered in first calls. CAPACITY New species/new technologies: SMEs measures!

Food/Non-Food research areas Seafood: –First calls generic approach to all food (including seafood!) items, but there are many opportunities (e.g. effects of diet on mental performance and on aging; food and feed technology) –More specific topics in the future supporting risk/benefit analysis of seafood consumption Blue Biotechnology: –First calls generic approach to all living resources but topics include reference to aquatic organisms and aquaculture –Some specific topics expected for the future

FP7-KBBE-2007-1 (02/05/2007) From capture based to self-sustained aquaculture (Small collaborative project) Improving cost-efficiency in the fisheries (Small collaborative project) Improving research in support to scientific advice to fisheries management outside EU waters (CA) Consolidate alliances with third countries in the field of aquaculture (CA) Mitigating adverse impacts of fisheries (Small collaborative project) The structure of fish populations and traceability of fish and fish products (Small collaborative project) Addressing uncertainty and complexity – governance for fisheries management (Small collaborative project) Interactions of fisheries and aquaculture of bluefin tuna (BFT) (SSA) FP7-KBBE-2007-2A (End 2007) Essential biological functions related to the most relevant stages of aquaculture fish life-history (Large collaborative project)

6. Environment and climate change Environmental Technologies Natural hazards: understanding and prevention Forecasting methods and assessment tools Earth observation Evolution of marine environments Environment and health Conservation and sustainable management of natural resources Pressures on environment and climate, impacts and feedback

Potential topics 2008 (Theme 6 - Environment) Activity 2 - Sustainable management of resources – Evolution of marine environments –Advances ecosystem models and methodologies for the management and sustainable use of resources –Ecology of important marine species –Mapping and Designation of marine habitats –Bioinvasions –Ecosystem assimilative capacity related to aquaculture activities
