1 Crayon Melting By: Corrie Jacobs December 5, 2013

2 Scientific Question Out of five different neon crayons, which one will melt the fastest?

3 Background I chose to do this project because I have always wondered which crayon with the same kind of tone would melt faster. By tone I mean neon colors, darker colors or lighter colors. I am doing neon because they are all light but have different color.

4 Hypothesis If I try to test which neon crayon will melt the fastest out of neon pink, neon purple, neon orange, neon green and neon yellow then the neon pink will melt the fastest.

5 Variables Independent (Manipulated) Variable: shape and size
Dependent Variable: how fast can each crayons can melt Controlled Variable:crayon brand, color and temperature

6 PROCEDURE Get out cupcake pan Put cupcake holders on the sheet
Get the five colors that you are going to melt Unwrap the paper around the crayon Put the crayon in the cupcake holder Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Place one of the five crayons that you want to melt onto the sheet Set the timer for ten mins Place the crayons in the oven Watch to see when the crayon melts Take the crayon out when it's melted Pause the timer and see how long it took Then report the data Repeat with the other crayons

7 Data Y Y-axis X-axis

8 Data Y-axis X-axis minutes it took to melt neon colors 5.75
neon orange 2.75 neon pink 2 neon yellow 2.55 neon green 1.95 neon purple

9 Data As I was melting the crayons i noticed that even if they were all neon that the darker ones still melted faster.

10 Conclusion Out of the five different neon crayons the color that melted the fastest was the neon purple. The crayon that took the longest out of the five crayons to melt was the neon orange. Even though they were all neon I learned that the darker colors would melt faster because it absorbed most of the heat. In my hypothesis I thought that the neon pink would melt the fastest but the neon purple ended up.
