1 Neutralization Reactions

2 Neutralization Reactions
A neutralization reaction in one where the acid and base join together and there is no longer Hydrogen ions or hydroxide ions floating around the solution. Therefore, there is nothing to make the solution either acidic or basic-it is neutral! pH = 7 when mol [H+] = mol [OH-] When an acid and a base come together, they make a salt and water! The salt is not an acid or a base, it is neutral.

3 Example: HCl + NaOH  NaCl + HOH H+ OH- Salt H2O
Is the Is the Is always cation anion a product A neutralization reaction is when an acid and a base react to form a salt that is not an acid or base. practice

4 These are double replacement reactions!
Identify the cation of the first compound. Identify the anion of the second compound. Write them together (Cation first, anion second), and find the charges of the two. Balance the charges and write the formula Identify the cation in the second compound and the anion in the first compound. Write them together (cation first, anion second), and find the charges of the two. Balance the charges and write the formula. Balance the equation.

5 Example: Predict the products for the following neutralization reaction. Then, identify the individual pieces as the acid, base, salt and water. HBr Ba(OH)2 

6 Check Your Understanding
What are the products of this reaction? HI + Mg(OH)2  Identify the acid, base, and salt in the reaction. Why is this called a neutralization reaction?

7 Try These… HCl + LiOH  NaOH + H2SO4  3. Ca(OH)2 + HNO3 
4. H3PO KOH 
