1 Acid-Base Reactions

2 Definitions Strong Acids  HCl  HBr  HI  HNO 3  HClO 4  H 2 SO 4 Acid: a species that supplies H + ions to water Strong acid: an acid that completely ionizes in water forming an H + ion and an anion Weak acid: an acid that only partially ionizes in water to give an H + ion and an anion

3 Definitions Strong Bases  LiOH  NaOH  KOH  Ca(OH) 2  Sr(OH) 2  Ba(OH) 2 Base: a species that supplies OH - ions to water Strong Base: a base that completely ionizes in water forming a OH - ion and a cation Weak base: a base that is only partially dissociated to form OH - ions in water Weak bases react with water and the OH - comes from the water. The remaining H + ion form the water attaches itself to the weak base.

4 Writing Equations for Acid-Base Reactions Write the net ionic equation between citric acid, H 3 C 6 H 5 O 7 and sodium hydroxide. General form: HB + OH -  B - + H 2 O H 3 C 6 H 5 O 7 + OH -  H 2 C 6 H 5 O 7 - + H 2 O Write the net ionic equation for phenylaniline, C 6 H 5 NH 2 and hydroiodic acid. C 6 H 5 NH 2 + H +  C 6 H 5 NH 3 + Write the net ionic equation for potassium hydroxide and perchloric acid. OH - + H +  H 2 O Write the net ionic equation for barium hydroxide and ascorbic acid, HC 6 H 7 O 6. OH - + HC 6 H 7 O 6 --  H 2 O + C 6 H 7 O 6 -
