3 Paragraph Writing Topic and Claim:
In Night by Elie Wiesel, Elie begins to show more care and affection for his father in chapter 5, especially if there is a chance of Elie and his father being separated. An example of this is when Elie’s father is picked for selection and he is giving away his tools to Elie: Don’t talk like that, father. I was on the verge of breaking into sobs I don’t want you say such things. Keep the spoon and knife. You need them as much is I. We’ll see each other tonight, after work. He looked at me with his tired eyes, viewed by despair. He insisted: I am asking you... Take it, do as I ask you, my son. Time is running out. Do as your father asked you…(Wiesel 75). Another example of Elie showing care and affection towards his father is when the inmates were evacuating the concentration camps because the Liberating Army was coming, “As for me, I was thinking not about death but not about wanting to be separated from my father. We had already suffered so much, endured so much together. This was not the moment to separate”(82).  To elaborate, when Elie finds out that another selection is taking place and his father was chosen, he was devastated and was afraid that his father would be of no use to the Germans and would be killed. To explain the second example, when the Jews were leaving the concentration camp, Elie was injured with a bad leg and had a choice to stay in the infantry. He decides to stay along by his father and this shows Elie as loving towards his father because he doesn’t want to be separated from him. It is evident that Elie is starting to care more for his father because he doesn’t want to feel lonely if he were to lose him. Topic and Claim: In Night by Elie Wiesel, Elie begins to show more care and affection for his father in chapter 5, especially if there is a chance of Elie and his father being separated. Evidence #1: An example of this is when Elie’s father is picked for selection and he is giving away his tools to Elie: Don’t talk like that, father. Evidence #2 Another example of Elie showing care and affection towards his father is when the inmates were evacuating the concentration camps because the Liberating Army was coming, “As for me, I was thinking not about death but not about wanting to be separated from my father. We had already suffered so much, endured so much together. This was not the moment to separate”(82).

Student Block Quote: An example of this is when Elie’s father is picked for selection and he is giving away his tools to Elie: Don’t talk like that, father. Corrected Quote: When Elie’s father is picked for selection, he gives away his tools to Elie, but Elie argues with him: Don’t talk like that, father. Do as your father asks you… (Wiesel 75)

5 Quote Student Quote: Another example of Elie showing care and affection towards his father is when the inmates were evacuating the concentration camps because the Liberating Army was coming, “As for me, I was thinking not about death but not about wanting to be separated from my father. We had already suffered so much, endured so much together. This was not the moment to separate”(82). Corrected Quote: Also, when the inmates were evacuating the concentration camps because the Liberating Army was coming, Wiesel explains, “As for me, I was thinking not about death but about not wanting to be separated from my father. We had already suffered so much, endured so much together. This was not the moment to separate” (82).
