2 Objectives 1. Students will describe the changing of history as a fundamental tenant in George Orwell’s 1984 2. Critically read and interpret chapter four of 1984, connecting content to the concept of textbook bias in the US 3. Identify and apply the term “bias” to national media outlets and the book 1984 Core Standards Addressed: RL : Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain. RL : Determine two or more themes or central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, including how they interact and build on one another to produce a complex account; provide an objective summary of the text. SL a: Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas.

3 Discussion Technique: “Save the last word”
Skim through chapters 2 or 3. Find the most interesting/thought-provoking/important passage. Write it (or most of it) on your opener sheet of paper. Share the passage/quote with the rest of the group (you may want to refer to the book). Group members take turns discussing its importance/guessing why you chose the way that you did (stay in order)…originator of quote cannot talk until everyone else has. To get the most out of this activity you must: 1. Think 2. LISTEN 3. RESPOND THOUGHFULLY

4 Bias? (Discussion/Framing the text)
Is there a liberal bias in textbooks? Do you agree or disagree with the commentators? Who decides what goes into textbooks? qySiCbzE

5 Read/Answer questions Quiz on chapters 1-3 TOMORROW IN CLASS!!!

6 Closure: Discussion questions
In Oceania, where does the concept of “truth” exist? Who is Comrade Ogilvy? How does the chapter connect to the textbook bias video?
