2 Sit together in groups of 3-4
Today we are going to rank hurricane-proof homes and design our own edible structure. You will need your notebook – our work today will go on page 54 (which you started previously)

3 Home # Materials Used in Construction What is GOOD about this home? What is BAD about this home? Your Hurricane Ranking 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

4 Home 1: Skyscraper Resistant glass skyscraper with steel rebar and angled roof for water-runoff. 2 miles away from the beach.

5 Home 2: Concrete Condo Concrete building with insulating foam with shuttered windows that open outward and gutters for water run-off. Across the street from beach access.

6 Home 3: Oceanside Condos
Community building with wind-resistant glass, concrete block build (no insulation), and gutters for water drainage. Flat roof. Overlooks the ocean.

7 Home 4: The Fixer-Upper Steel building with reinforced rebar. Windows are broken. Has hurricane straps on roof and walls. 2 miles from ocean, 15 feet above sea level.

8 Home 5: Parking Garage Building made of concrete. Doors and windows open inward. Has OSB-reinforced storm walls. 3 blocks from the beach. Flat roof without water drainage.

9 Home 6: Stilt House Concrete and wood construction. On stilts for high water. Hip Roof that allows for water drainage. Doors and windows open outward. Directly on beach.

10 Home 7: Wind-resistant House
Aerodynamic design, water run-off roof design, storm-reinforced glass. Directly on water, with seawall surrounding home.

11 Home 8: Downtown Condo Concrete building with regular glass, windows damaged from previous storm, no shutters, flat roof with no water drainage.

12 Hurricane-Proof Home Create a home out of the supplies at your table. Describe the home in complete sentences. Make sure your home has at least 5 hurricane-proof features. Draw the home and label the 5 features. If you think your home has what it takes, test it against our “hurricane” fan.
