1 Science Chapter 1 THE NATURE OF SCIENCE

2 CHAPTER 1 VOCABULARY Scientist Investigate Inquiry Infer Model
Procedure Chart Bar Graph Tool Unit of Measure

3 Lesson 1: What questions do scientists ask?
Goal: to know the types of questions a scientist asks What kind of questions do we ask in class? Why do we ask questions in class? Why might a scientist ask questions?

4 Scientists A scientist is……..
Scientists collect observations in an organized way We observe by using what? Investigate means…. To look for answers Scientists investigate so they can explain their answers!

5 EVERYONE can be a scientist!!
You are a scientist when you…… ….ask questions and investigate. What questions can we ask about the world?

6 QUESTIONS! Science begins with inquiry Inquiry means……
…asking questions Scientists ask questions they can investigate Questions might come from something a scientist sees or a problem they know Questions a scientist might ask: How can I make my plants grow bigger? How can I stop bugs eating my plants? Do plants need water to grow?

7 Questions That Science CANNOT Answer
Some questions can not be answered by investigating! Ex. Which flower is the prettiest? What color is the best? Does orange juice taste better than apple juice? The answers to these questions are OPINIONS Science can not answer questions about personal opinions, only facts What is a fact? Opinion?

8 Alone or in Teams Sometimes scientists work alone
But sometimes scientists can learn more by working together When we work together we can share information and discoveries

9 GOT IT? Answer each question using complete sentences in your science notebook 1. If you are acting like a scientist in class, what would you be doing? Write three things 2. Write one question a scientist can answer, and one questions a scientist can not answer. Explain why they can not answer the second question.

10 LESSON 2 What Skills Do Scientists Use
Goal: You will know what process skills are Goal: You will know how to use process skills

11 Science Skills Scientists use process skills to learn about objects, places or events Process skills are: observations, infer, predict, estimate, measure, interpret, and explain Observation: when you use your five senses Who can name the five senses?

12 Scientists often use tools to make observations!
A satellite is a tool that helps scientists observe weather What other tools might a scientists use??

13 Estimate and Measure Scientists sometimes estimate when they make observations Estimate means….. …..to make a careful, logical guess A scientist might ESTIMATE the speed on a car. To find the exact speed a scientist would have to use a TOOL and MEASURE A measurement is…….. …..a number that tells how much or how many

14 Infer and Predict Some information and observations are fact
Ex. Our walls are green You can use FACTS to infer, or draw a conclusion Ex. Our walls are green because…… Scientists infer what they think is happening based on observations or prior knowledge Ex. Our walls are green because all the other walls are green Observations can help you predict what will happen Ex. The art room will be painted soon, it will PROBABLY be green.

15 Interpret and Explain Data
Scientists work together to interpret their data and for scientific explanations A GOOD EXPLANATION uses Observations Inferences Prior knowledge Measurements Data from an investigation

16 GOT IT? Answer each question using complete sentences in your science notebook 1) Name two process skills. How can they help a scientist learn about a hurricane? 2)What might happen if a person building a hue estimated but did not measure the length of a piece of wood?
