2 Unit 1 Lesson 1 What Is Science?
Indiana Standards 8.1.6 Explain that elements and compounds have characteristic properties such as density, boiling points and melting points, that remain unchanged regardless of the sample size. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

3 Physical properties: 3 of 9
Unit 2 Lesson 1 Properties of Matter Physical properties: A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance is called a physical property. All of the senses can be used to observe physical properties. Mass Volume Change in mass or volume without change in the identity of the substance. & State of matter – liquid, solid, or gas Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

4 Physical properties: 4 of 9
Unit 2 Lesson 1 Properties of Matter Physical properties: Electrical conductivity is a measure of how well electric currents moves through a substance. Density is the measure of the amount of matter in a given volume. Thermal conductivity is the rate at which a substance transfers heat. Solubility is the ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

5 Physical properties: 5 of 9
Unit 2 Lesson 1 Properties of Matter Physical properties: Malleability is the ability of a substance to be rolled or pounded into various shapes. Magnetic attraction is also a physical property that can be observed. The shine, or luster, of a metal can be easily observed. The melting point of a substance is the temperature at which it changes from a solid to a liquid. Boiling point is the point at which a substance boils. 6 (Identity Theft) Chemical properties: 6 of 9
Unit 2 Lesson 1 Properties of Matter Chemical properties: (Identity Theft) A chemical property describes the ability of a substance to change into a new substance with different properties. Chemical properties can be identified by the changes they produce. The ability to rust or tarnish is a chemical property because, in each case, a metal changes to a different substance. Flammability is the ability of a substance to burn. Reactivity is the ability of a substance to interact with another substance and form one or more new substances. 7 The difference between physical and chemical properties:
7 of 9 Unit 2 Lesson 1 Properties of Matter The difference between physical and chemical properties: Physical properties can be observed without changing the identity of a substance. Chemical properties can be observed only by changing the identity of a substance. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

8 8 of 9 Unit 2 Lesson 1 Properties of Matter Forensic Science: Forensic Science: the collection and study of physical evidence in a criminal investigation Ashes from an arson scene can be heated to determine chemicals used to start a fire. Flecks of paint and the analysis of fibers can provide clues to criminal cases. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

9 Characteristic Properties:
