Beta Science Mr. McMartin Matter

Definition Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space. Do not get this confused with “mass” which is “the amount of matter in an object.”

Matter Videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYFAj50c7xM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCgTJ6ID6ZA

Physical Property Physical Property: a characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change, such as density, color or hardness. Thermal conductivity State Density Solubility Ductility Malleability

Thermal Conductivity Thermal Conductivity: is the rate at which a substance transfers heat. (Amazing Ice Melting Blocks Demonstration)

State State: is the physical form in which a substance exists, such as a solid, liquid, or gas.

Density Density: is the mass per unit volume of a substance. How to find density: D= M/V D= density M= mass V= volume - Density Paradox Set Demonstration - Two Steel Spheres Demonstration - 6 Liquids demonstration

Solubility Solubility: is the ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance. Why is this a physical property? When something is dissolved how do we get it back?

Ductility Ductility: is the ability of a substance to be pulled into a wire.

Malleability Malleability: is the ability of a substance to be rolled or pounded into thin sheets.

Chemical Properties Chemical Property: a property of matter that describes a substance’s ability to participate in chemical reactions. Flammability: the ability of a substance to burn. Reactivity: the ability of two or more substances to combine and form one or more new substances.

Chemical & Physical Change Chemical Change: a change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances. (it changes “composition”) Physical Change: a change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties. (doesn’t change “composition”) Composition: the type of matter that makes up the object and the way that the matter is arranged in the object.
