5 Reading The emphasis in reading in 5th grade is on students’ comprehension of narrative and informational texts, as well as poetry. DRP Fountas & Pinnell Comprehension/Fluency Guided Reading Groups Read Aloud & Independent Reading Reading Homework: 20 minutes each night reader’s response 1-2x a week

6 Writing Writing Genres: * Expository/Informational Writing
The emphasis in writing in 5th grade is to have students develop more of an awareness of their audience and purpose. Writing Genres: * Expository/Informational Writing * Opinion Writing & Persuasive Writing * Narrative Writing * Poetry Writing Homework : 1 Entry per week due Fridays– Free write or assigned prompt or topic

- Computing with whole numbers and decimals - Algebraic Connections - Addition and Subtraction of Fractions - Making Sense of Multiplication of Fractions - Understanding Division of a Unit Fraction and a Whole Number - Classifying 2-Dimensional Figures Exploring Volumes of Solid Figures

9 Math (cont.) Bridges Piloting through December
Parent Letter with Unit overview Fact Tests: Knowing the basic facts provides students with a strong foundation for performing computations in upcoming mathematics units. Goal: 95% out of 100 facts accurate in five minutes

10 Social Studies Human Rights Coming to the New World
(early migration/settlements) Establishing the 13 Colonies Our Democratic Ideal (formation of our first federal government and how it works today)

12 Immigration Nation An academic enrichment program focusing on the significant contributions of immigrant groups to American culture Education Connection grant program funded by the State Department of Education 250 fifth-graders from Litchfield, Bethel, Danbury, Colebrook, and North Canaan Scheduled Field Trip: -Indian Rock: October 30th

13 Michael Moschen – Master Juggler
The fifth grade classes at L.I.S. will be participating in a year-long program, working with master juggler Michael Moschen. “Moschen is deeply involved in understanding and sharing the physical and mathematical principles that underlie his work.”
