1 Quick review… states of matter
Take a look at the following picture and tell your shoulder partner an example of a solid, liquid and gas that you see…

2 Glass of Pop Examples

3 Match up the below descriptions of the movement of particles to the 4 states of matter we learned…
Particles move freely and are far apart Particles are tightly packed and vibrate in place Particles are tightly packed but can slip past each other

4 Match up the below statements with the 4 states of matter we learned…
Has a definite volume and definite shape Has a definite volume and a variable shape Has a variable volume and variable shape

5 Which of the four states of matter flow?

6 Energy

7 Energy – the ability to change or move matter, to do work
Kinetic Energy – energy in motion

8 Kinetic Theory of Matter – matter is made of atoms and molecules, these atoms and molecules are like tiny particles that are always in motion Man I’m so tired can’t I take a break!! No way! Molecules are always in motion!

9 -The higher the temperature of the substance, the faster the particles move

10 - At the same temperature, more massive
- At the same temperature, more massive particles move slower than less massive ones

11 So if all atoms and molecules are in motion… do all particles of matter have kinetic energy?

12 Temperature – is actually the measure of average kinetic energy of the particles in an object All particles of matter are constantly moving, however not all at the same speed

13 Based on what we just talked about do you think molecules that move faster or slower have a higher temperature?

14 Keep in mind… temperature is the average kinetic movement of particles (movement, speed)
Thermal Energy – the total kinetic energy of the particles that make up a substance, depends on particle speed and number of particles

15 If I have a cup of water that is the same temperature as a gallon of water… which has a higher amount of thermal energy? What about kinetic energy?

16 Any Questions??? Please work on the assignment at the bottom of the page…
