SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: Social permission of gambling opportunities Gambling is seen as recreational activity that is well entrenched in Australian society and culture There is significant infrastructure in place in Australian society that allows people to gamble on any event (eg. Sportsbet, Tom Waterhouse) The perception that gambling is permissible in our culture has a significant impact in determining the rate and frequency of gambling behaviours This is related to the promotion, accessibility and availability of gambling outlets KK 5 (III) c) – PAGE

Social Permission of Gambling Opportunities: Research shows that; Younger Australians are more likely to perceive gambling as socially acceptable due to societal norms Societal norms decrease the likelihood of negative consequences being associated with gambling A younger person is more likely to engage in regular gambling if their family and friends actively gamble and promote positive values and attitudes about gambling A young person is more vulnerable to misunderstandings about gambling and chance events (eg. that losses can be recovered) KK 5 (III) c) – PAGE
