1 BELLRINGER Feb 4 Answer the question on the paper. Why was it a good idea for Cowperthwaite to contrast the behavior of the orcas in the wild with the behavior of the orcas in the marine parks? It will be graded Be sure you write with complete sentences.

2 Writing the Essay Use the organizer to help you write. Here’s how.

3 Step One: Introduction Paragraph
Hook- any kind you want. Get the reader’s attention. Summary- What was the film and the rebuttal about? Thesis- write your main idea here. Be specific and go beyond restating the prompt.

4 Step 2 – Body Paragraph 1 (Ethos?)
Develop Reason 1 – It could address the credibility of the film or the filmmaker. State your first reason. Give a piece of evidence from the film. Sandwich that piece of evidence with an explanation.

5 For example (disagree side)
Cowperthwaite’s film has issues with believability once you find out that the scientists are not objective as stated in SeaWorld’s rebuttal. The film presents Lori Marino as only a neuroscientist, but she is actually an animal rights activist at Emory University and she specifically studies marine mammals neurology. So when she talks about the orcas being “emotionally destroyed,” she is not talking as a scientist, but as an animal lover. The problem for the film is that she is presented as an objective scientist; we are led to believe that it is a scientific fact that the orcas are wrecks when it is just one opinion.

6 Step 3 – Body Paragraph 2 (Pathos)
Develop Reason 2. It should address how the film makes us feel so that we are more likely to agree with the film. State your first reason. Give a piece of evidence from the film. Sandwich that piece of evidence with an explanation.

7 For example (AGREE side)
Another way that Cowperthwaite evokes pity involves showing footage of orca mothers crying for their missing babies. The film shows an orca making high pitched noise and based on the context we can only assume that it is footage shot after the baby was removed. Reasonable humans could not help feeling that the separation SeaWorld has created is wrong and we would identify with a mother missing her child. This example would help her argument because of our sympathetic pity and it also casts SeaWorld in a harsh, unfeeling light.

8 Step 4 – Body Paragraph 3 (logos
Develop Reason 3. You should specifically address how the film logically presents evidence. State your first reason. Give a piece of evidence from the film. Sandwich that piece of evidence with an explanation.

9 For Example (Agree Side)
The film logically progresses through the argument with specific emphasis on the difference between wild and captive orca behavior. Cowperthwaite relies on Howard Garrett, a known orca researcher, to describe the peaceful and friendly orca pods, which are actually families. She emphasizes the playfulness and cooperation of the wild orca. In captivity, not only are orcas mainly playing to earn their food, as emphasized by the trainer stories, but they also attack each other with bloody and deadly results. The reason this contrast works for the film is because we are left with the conclusion that captivity causes the orcas to behave unnaturally aggressive. The film’s ending with orcas in the wild is a stark contrast to the listless orcas at SeaWorld.

10 Step 5 – Counterargument
Start with writing about how people could say that YOUR ARGUMENT is wrong. Give a piece of evidence which those people could use. Explain why that reason and evidence doesn’t work.

11 Step 6: Conclusion Paragraph
Restate your main ideas. Leave the audience with your opinion. Give us something to think about or to do about the issue.

12 Exit ticket Where are you with your essay? What specific help or feedback do you need to make sure you hit ALL the criteria on the scoring guide.
