2 LAB SAFETY You have been given 2 Safety Contracts.
Read this carefully, sign one and bring home for your parents to sign. Keep the other in your notebook for reference throughout the year. You will have a quiz on safety practices on Tuesday 9/6/16

3 BASIC RULES No horseplay is allowed in the lab!
Unauthorized experiments are prohibited Work areas should be clean and tidy Students should be prepared for a lab activity and have read all of the lab procedure thoroughly prior to entering the classrooms Do not begin a lab until the teacher instructs you to do so If you are unsure of directions, etc., you would ask a teacher

4 Safety Equipment Long hair should be tied back, dangling jewelry should not be worn and closed-toed shoes are most appropriate. Goggles are to be worn throughout the duration of a lab to protect you from chemicals, heat and glass breakage If you wear contacts, alert your teacher and be prepared to remove them if necessary You must wear goggles over your glasses Lab aprons should be worn during all lab activities

5 During the experiment Flammable materials should never be used near a flame If you are heating materials in a test tube, be sure to face the open end away from people After heating glassware, you should only move the glassware using tongs Be sure all glassware is clean and in proper working order prior to beginning a lab Be careful when placing a stopper in glassware. If it is too tight, you should be very careful and use appropriate materials specified by your teacher, such as glycerin and gloves Be wary of all glass an chemicals and assume they are dangerous Never ingest chemicals, remove them from the lab or enter the chemical storage rooms Never leave a flame unattended

6 Accidents If there is a fire or injury, alert your teacher immediately
Know the location and proper use of all safety equipment If a piece of equipment is not working properly, turn it off and alert your teacher If acid is splashed on your skin, wash immediately with plenty of water Do not use materials that are chipped, cracked or broken in other ways Do not touch broken glass.

7 Ending the lab All chemical wastes should be disposed of as instructed by your teacher in a waste-disposal container. NEVER return used chemicals to their original container When you finish a lab, clean up the materials and the lab station and wash your hands

8 HOMEWORK Complete the final pages of the Course Description for next class (parents must also sign) Read and understand the Safety Contract and have signed for next class (parents must also sign) 3. Safety quiz on Tuesday Sept. 6th
