1 Vocabulary During this unit, we will be studying the region of Sub-Saharan Africa. This region is incredibly rich in both history and culture. For us to fully appreciate what we are going to study we must become familiar with the following vocabulary terms.

2 1. Sub-Saharan Africa the region below the Sahara Desert that is considered African rather than Arab.

3 2. Sahel area between the Sahara desert and the rest of Africa

4 3. Natural Resources A supply of materials produced by the Earth that are valuable to human society. =

5 4. Physical Map shows the landscape of a particular place/region.

6 5. Political Map shows state and national boundaries.

7 6. Thematic Map reveals information about a specific topic within a region.

8 7. Colonize to settle in an area and take control of its government.

9 8. Apartheid the legal system of South Africa in which the rights of nonwhites were greatly restricted.

10 9. Desertification the process by which fertile land becomes too dry or damaged to support life.

11 10. Cultural Diffusion the spread of customs and
ideas from one culture to another

12 11. Nationalism a feeling of pride in one’s homeland; a group’s identity as members of a nation.

13 12. Slave Trade collecting, transporting, & selling of human beings as slaves, in particular the former trade in African blacks as slaves by European countries & North America.

14 13. Primary Resource A document or object that was created at the same time as an event or by a person directly involved in the event. The original source, NOT a copy, the REAL thing.

15 14. Secondary Resource a document or object which was written or created after the time being study. NOT the original, a copy, NOT the real thing.
