2. What is a fat? Fat contains 3 elements Carbon Hydrogen and Oxygen
It does not dissolve in water

3. The macro molecule
The macromolecule of fat is called a triglyceride

4. What are the building blocks
The triglyceride has two parts
A back bone called glycerol
Three arms called
fatty acids

5. What are fatty acids? Fatty acids can come from Animals
Eg. Bacon, butter, egg yolk, chicken skin
These are called Saturated fats
They are solid at room temp
They have no double bonds

6. What are fatty acids? Some fatty acids come from plants
Eg. Corn oil, safflower oil, peanut oil
They are polyunsaturated
They are liquid at room temp
They have lots of double bonds

7. What are fatty acids? Some fatty acids come from fish or plants
Eg. Olive oil, cod liver oil, salmon fat
These are called monounsaturated fats.
They only have 1 double bond

8. Omega 3
If the double bond is on the 3rd carbon from the end it’s an omega 3 fatty acid. They are really good for your brain and myelin sheath.
Eat fish before a math exam. It makes you smart!!!!!!

9. Trans fats
These are found in junk food and taste good but are bad for your health.
The hydrogens are on opposite sides of the double bonds

10. What does our body use fat for?
Stores energy for emergencies
Builds the myelin sheath of your nerves.
Builds your blood vessels
Dissolves vitamins A, D, E, K
Insulates our body from cold
Protects our organs from shock
Gives us shape
Makes membranes surrounding every cell in your body.

11. Enzymes that break fats down
The enzymes that break fat down are called lipases
Lip = lipid or fat
Ase = enzyme

12. Id of fat in Lab It’s called the grease spot test.
Just like french fries in a paper bag.
The paper bag becomes translucent ( the light can shine through it)
Yet it remains strong.
It doesn’t dry.
Pioneers used to use oiled paper for windows.
