1 Topic: Biochemistry pg. 9
Essential Question: What are life’s building blocks? Topic: Biochemistry pg. 9

2 Elements, Atoms, Molecules, Compounds

3 Molecule A group of atoms bonded together

4 Our Bodies are Made of Two Types of
Molecules. . . Organic Molecules- giant chains of carbon AND hydrogen Inorganic Molecules- do not have both carbon and hydrogen These are what are bodies are made of, so it is also important that we are always trying to get them to maintain homeostasis We also use these molecules for energy!

5 Organic or Inorganic? Fat (C55H98 O6) Water (H2O) Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Write an I or an O next to each Fat (C55H98 O6) Water (H2O) Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Oxygen (O2) Sugar (C6H12O6) Protein (C2ONH2)x

6 We need these molecules to survive… How does our body obtain them?

7 Biomolecules “living” group of atoms
Biomolecules are molecules produced by living organisms, including macromolecules

8 This unit is about biomolecules, but more specifically, it is about biological macromolecules

9 4 Macromolecules Carbohydrates Lipids (Fats) Proteins Nucleic Acids

10 What do these words mean?
Micro MACRO

11 So what is a macromolecule?
A macromolecule is a very large molecule made of many smaller units

12 “Mono” means…. Monogamy Monotonous

13 ONE MONO means

14 “Poly” means…. Polytheism Polygons Polygamy

15 MANY POLY means

16 Monomers and Polymers Monomers are the repetitive units of a polymer
Polymers are long molecules built from repeating monomers

17 What is the monomer?

18 What is the monomer? ABCABCABCABCABCABC
