2 Modernism

3 Modernism as a literary movement came about because of changes seen throughout the world before, during, and after WWI, specifically the development of things like airplanes, cars, and telephones and the devastation and aftermath of WWI. Writers and artists tried to find new ways to create art that reflected the changes they saw in the world. Modernism was a reaction against Victorian beliefs, traditions, and values. It also reflected the loss of faith in the “American Dream” and the idea that the independent, self-reliant person would be better off in the long run. Modernism

4 Writers began to play games with time and order, perspective, point of view, and form. Novels were written with fragmented plots not clear beginnings, middles, and ends. In poetry, that meant strange metaphors stacked on top of each other, mixing meters and free verse, and allusions to the past. Writers began to use stream of consciousness instead of “normal” third person POV Modernism
