2 Secession and War Abolitionist- supported the ending of slavery
North- No slavery South- Slavery If North did not agree to allow the South to have slavery the South threatened to secede Break away from the Union Feb. 1861, 7 states seceded and established the Confederate States of America

3 Important People of Civil War
Robert E. Lee- commanded the Confederate army Ulysses S. Grant- commanded the Union forces Jefferson Davis- Confederate President Abraham Lincoln- Union President Harriet Tubman- fugitive slave, helped with Underground Railroad Frederick Douglass- Abolitionist

4 North Large pop. Industrialized Railroads Navy Established Gov. Travel long distances Not all passionate South Fighting for survival Strong leaders Defensive war Familiar territory Small pop. Few supplies New gov. No navy

5 Important Decisions Compromise of Allowed California to be a free state and enacted the fugitive slave law Kansas-Nebraska Act- Divided a territory into Kansas and Nebraska and allowed them to decide “free or slave” state Dred Scott Case- Slave Dred Scott sued for his freedom. Lost. Courts said slaves were property and could not sue

6 Important Decisions Uncle Tom’s Cabin- Election of 1860-
written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Gave slavery a face Election of 1860- Lincoln wins presidency easily Wasn’t on Southern ballot

7 Important Events Fort Sumter- held by the North, South fired on the fort, North forced to surrender the fort, beginning of the war Gettysburg- 3 day battle, Lee is defeated and forced to retreat, 50,000 dead/wounded Appomattox Court House- Lee surrendered to Grant April 9,1865 13th Amendment- outlaw slavery

8 Lasting Effects Industry continued in North
Southern cities were in ruin South had economic problems African Americans had new hope Federal gov played a bigger role Reconstruction would help rebuild the South
