8. LAND, DREAMING AND LAW
Indigenous Australians have a close relationship to land:
Life depended on understanding seasons and foods.
It connected them with their ancestral beings.
It provided everything and they had to protect it.
The local environment provided everything the people needed for life: animal skins were used for clothing and sinew for thread; stones made tools, and ochre was used in painting; bark fibre was used for nets and carry bags.

9. The Dreaming
Knowledge of the land, food and seasons was passed on through stories, song cycles, ceremonies, dances and art. This is known as the Dreaming

10. Before British colonisation there were about 260 major Aboriginal language groups across Australia.
Each language group had its own customs, laws and sacred sites that formed its own Dreaming explaining:
how they came to be
significance of sacred sites
the laws and the rules governing people kinship relationships determining the obligations people had to each other
the rituals and ceremonies.

11. Indigenous people believe that they have a duty to care for the sacred places on the land of their ancestors by:
caring for the land and for living things
carrying out certain rituals and ceremonies
passing on Dreaming secrets to the next generation.
